The economics of cruise lines are very closely analogous to that of space travel. Making these ships habitable and building social cultures that can survive long periods on them will make other planets habitable. The only meaningful difference is propulsion.
I feel like there is a more cyberpunk future for cruise lines where once Starlink and remote work is more mature, living aboard one will be economical for a bunch of reasons like land costs, crime, tax domicile, identity. The part in the video with personal quadcopter taxis solves a bunch of dinghy problems
The World (large cruise ship with condominiums) was made for retired seniors, but a bunch of remote employees living on them getting paid electronically and paying for fuel, food, and maintenance is sort of the city state concept that dumber ideas (sovereign stationary sea platforms) got in their own way of implementing. Las Vegas began in a similar way, where it attracted revenue with gambling, where a ship would collect it from residents who made money via remote work. One could even try real socialism on board because in a closed environment it would be sure to work.[*] Maybe we launch a fleet of cruise ships and offer housing to people who can be trained in remote jobs, where each vessel lives under different systems of rule for a year or two, and see how they work out.
Edit: there is almost no public service administration job that could not be done remotely from one of these ships as well.
- DonHopkins 4y agoSo exactly who is going to collect the garbage and mop the floors?
- motohagiography 4y agoThe maintainance crews paid for by residents whose quarters are subsidized by the fees. Provided nobody catches a mind virus or they get offboarded before it can spread, it could work pretty well. Communes work pretty well until they don't on the same principles.
- DonHopkins 4y agoBy "mind virus" do you mean the uppity notion that slavery is wrong?
- motohagiography 4y agoBy mind virus I mean being infected by interpreting one's circumstances through a lens that mainly serves to moralize envy and malice. Once someone has convinced you that you are a slave or a victim, it doesn't matter what you do to right the percieved wrong, the point is that now you can be relied upon to act with less humanity and dignity because you have internalized the self belief that you are somehow less than a full person, and that's sufficient for the purposes. It's a straight hustle and it's old as dirt. There is plenty of dignity in sweeping floors, but only if you haven't given up your own basic human dignity first.
