The positive effect of walking on creative thinking (2014)
- Kaibeezy 4y ago2014. 100% agree. Slow walking in particular, where you don’t have to waste mental energy scanning for hazards, and can talk to yourself out loud and wave your arms around in a more coherent manner. From personal experience, I recommend an elderly dog as a companion to keep your pace down. My very good boy is named as co-author on a couple of recent patents.
- ephaeton 4y agofully agree about the dogs part. I made a short video on my dogs' impact on my didgeridoo practice and inspiration pool refills: https://youtube.com/shorts/aaDWZnmForU https://youtube.com/shorts/aaDWZnmForU for a completely non-scientific take ;)
- stephc_int13 4y agoIt works with walking, taking a shower or even going to the toilet. I think the reason is simple: our bodies and minds set themselves in a kind of low-power mode when we're sitting or lying down. This is why we have to drink so much coffee or other stimulants to do useful work while sitting.
- revskill 4y agoThat's why async communication is the foundation of a productive team.

- corobo 4y agoIs there a version of this in one column? Two columns are already a pain to read but it's even harder when they overlap each other haha https://img.imgy.org/rg9J.png https://img.imgy.org/rg9J.png
- WanderPanda 4y agoIt is insane how when listening to a podcast while (slow) walking around attaches ideas to places. When I rewind or e.g. try to find the time where I paused the podcast before, after hearing a concept I can directly tell where I was walking when hearing about it
- chiefalchemist 4y agoFrom what I've read, learning and memory is contextual. Not only location, but state of mind, and even altered stated of mind (e.g., alcohol). Which also explains those human moments when you've forgotten (e.g.) why you went into the kitchen and have to go back to the dining room to remember why. The brain is amazing. Quirky, but amazing.
- euroderf 4y agoResearch back in the 70s showed that (for example) if you studied the subject high, you should take the exam high.
