why are tools that capture personal relationships always (apparently) online-only? I don't understand why companies keep building social networks and trying to capture this stuff. to be clear, there's a lot I don't understand, so maybe it makes perfect sense, but I doubt it.

As clearly stated on the front page, you can install it on your own server if you want to. This is open source, and they even provide a ready-to-run Docker image.
