Epic: More than half of all announced next-gen games are made on Unreal Engine
- jasonjamerson 4y agoI'd like to also see what percentage of TV shows, films, commercials, etc. will be made in Unreal as well. At the rate the tech is expanding, pretty soon any media could be created in it.
- superchroma 4y agoSeems like clear market dominance, which is concerning. An unscrupulous company could start to increasingly leverage this in five years or so.
- Lammy 4y agoArguably already happened a decade ago https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silicon_Knights#Lawsuit_with_Epic_Games https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silicon_Knights#Lawsuit_with_E...
- TillE 4y agoUnreal Engine could probably take over the entire industry if they had a small team dedicated to low-/mid-range games, including 2D games. Improve everything from the developer experience to binary size and runtime performance. They made a really smart move several years ago in putting everything on GitHub and making it free to get started, but all their tooling is still heavily geared towards AAA (and maybe "AA") development. They've been incredibly successful at taking over that sector, but they're still leaving opportunities on the table.
- andrewmcwatters 4y agoUnfortunately not very reassuring for multiplayer fans considering the engine, out of the box, provides heavily unreliable defaults leading to poor gameplay results. I am no longer surprised when I play something based on Unreal tech and it doesn't play well over networks. Considering the available pool of skilled multiplayer developers, it's not a great sign for the industry.
- ksec 4y agoHow long ago was that? I was under the impression they made huge improvement once they made Fornite and extracted a lot of code back to Unreal.
- andrewmcwatters 4y agoStill happens to this day. It's egregious. In fact, I don't even think production games can use the default code, that's how atrocious it is. You basically have to roll your own movement, user input, and consolidation code. Go create a multiplayer game then turn on some fakelag and compare it to older games. No comparison whatsoever. It's dead on arrival. Completely unusable. Whatever they're doing in official titles, users don't have access to it. Separately from Epic Games, Valorant's development team has their own series of patches to make Unreal reliable, and it's a total hack job because the engine doesn't have consistent frame timing nor a mechanism for frame rewinding. You're basically on your own. They milk their graphics marketing because it's the best in the business, but everything else in the engine leaves you wanting.
