I taught myself react the quick and dirty way, because I had to (company wanted to use it, and there were no one else willing and able to do it, or to teach me). It's not that long ago, yet useEffect wasn't even around then. I could probably make use of a book about it. It also probably doesn't help that I taught myself JavaScript the same way, at the same time.
