I really thought by now in history there would be a "letsencrypt for domains" (alternate DNS root) that even corporate adopted to end ICANN expense I mean they have tried with OpenNIC etc but never had adoption. It would take android and ios adoption but the huge impossible hurdle of course is legacy backwards compatibility.
