They Paused Puberty, but Is There a Cost?
- oifjsidjf 4y agoMales who take analbolic steroids can permamently supress natural testosterone production. There is an injectable that they can take after they stop taking testosterone which restarts the natural testosterone production, but some guys are not careful enough to do this which can lead to permanant damage -> this leads to low or no testosterone production, which in males causes depression since the male body is designed for a certain physiological dose of T in the blood -> if it's too low -> damage, depression, illness,... Messing with hormones is one of the most dangerous things as you can: a) Cause the body to shutdown the natural production, which can lead to the death/diminishing of the tissue that produces it. b) You can cause a hormonal disruption system-wide, a domino like chain effect which can wreck havok on the body. To believe that one can simple "adjust a bit of hormone A, then a bit of B" and that there would be no side effects is horribly naive. But modern doctors are horrible naive, as anyone who has done reading a lot around this topic will naturaly come to understand. First you get pill A, then you get pill B to manage side effects of pill A, then you need pill C to manage side effects of pill B, then you need a surgery because pill A supressed cholesterol too much which is a crucial building blocks of the body (50% of each cell membrane is cholesterol for example, so tell me again how cholesterol is bad), then you need pills D, E, F...
- sn0w_crash 4y agoI’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - Trans medicine is a massive revenue opportunity and shareholders would do well to maximize this. Charging people a permanent lifelong subscription fee for being who they identify as - might be the single largest healthcare revenue generator in history. Imagine if the population of trans folks increased from its current nominal level to, say, 5% of all humans. That would be a lifelong subscription plan for a subscriber base larger than the USA. To my knowledge this is currently unprecedented as far as subscription medicine models go.
- feet 4y agoAgain with this nonsense? The percentage of trans people is highly unlikely to increase https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33568480#33576777 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33568480#33576777
- sn0w_crash 4y agoWhy is this nonsense? The global trans hormone replacement market is growing at 6% / year through 2028. The number of people who identify as trans has grown sharply in just the past 5 years. It sounds like you’re uncomfortable with more folks identifying as trans? Or are you unsure of the revenue potential for pharma companies? I am confused why you are upset at these market trends
- feet 4y agoIt sounds like you misunderstand the fact that being trans has a stigma attached to it and the same percentage of the population has always been trans but more are comfortable coming out as trans now. The percentage is not actually changing. It's the same as coming out of the closet as homosexual, people used to get beaten and killed for it but not as much anymore in the US. That's what stigma does and public perception has been changing to be more accepting, that's all.
- spungfungi 4y agoExactly, and there are hospital administrators and other professionals in this sphere who are on record (as in, recorded in conferences where they are speaking freely) as having said exactly this. They know it's a growth area in the for-profit health industry and are quite happy to see more hormones, more surgeries, more follow-up work being offered as a first-line treatment to people undergoing such identity crises. There's no money to be made in watchful waiting.
