One of the UK’s Largest Pig Farms Closes Down Following Animal Welfare Breaches
- lzooz 4y agoAs if inflation wasn't bad enough...
- z9znz 4y agoYour point being? Are you suggesting that horrible animal welfare is bad, and that it adds to the negative feelings that you already have because of inflation? Or are you suggesting that a business closing down is bad because we're also in a bigger inflation period?
- lzooz 4y agoThe latter - if it really is one of the biggest farms, this may affect prices, which are bad as it is.
- hutzlibu 4y agoWell, maybe consider yourself lucky, that inflation is your problem and not living a life, like one of those pigs. Sometimes I hope, that karma and reincarnation works, though.
- brigandish 4y agoMeat, and food in general in the UK is incredibly cheap, one pig farm closing down won't affect your ability to get cheap food. Regardless, most people eat too much, too lacking in quality meat, a bit of scarcity will do everyone some good in this regard.
- acta_non_verba 4y agoYes, the poor in England really will appreciate this additional kicking. I actually don't understand what has to happen to someone for them to be able to disassociate from normality like this.
- brigandish 4y agoThe poor in England won't be getting an additional kicking from because it will have barely any impact on them, but even if they couldn't buy crappy sausages which barely have anything you'd describe as meat in them, it would be good for them as even cheaper food like beans is far more healthy for them, and their finances.
- Sharlin 4y agoMeat is incredibly – and mostly artifially – cheap in the West, inflation or no inflation. So I’m sorry, but can’t really sympathize at all.
- scott_w 4y agoThat's not a cause of inflation. The lack of workers is the main cause, which won't change because of one farm closing.
- djbebs 4y agoNo reason to close this.
- PretzelPirate 4y agoThey're abusing animals. Please don't support animal abuse. It's easy for you to eat something else.
- colinmhayes 4y agoThe reality is most people don’t give a shit about animal welfare and unfortunately a huge percentage of the population would have no problem eating tortured meat if it was a bit cheaper.
- steve_adams_86 4y agoI believe the reality is that people can change their minds about that too, though. I did. I never wanted animals to suffer in the first place, but once upon a time I did think of it as an unfortunate consequence of a natural order of things. If I can chance my point of view on that, others can too. I think it’s worth trying.
- z9znz 4y agoMost people don't care about abuse in general, as long as they don't see or experience it directly... and especially if they get some benefit from it occurring. How many people knowingly still shop at places (like Primark, which is huge and well known for sourcing goods which are made by child labor) just because it's cheap, and they're ok with trading their personal savings for the harm of people/creatures they can't see? It's not so different from the most people who don't care about pollution as long as it is not in their back yard. People are greedy and stupid, and the human civilization is destined for failure.
- brigandish 4y agoFrom the article: > In 2020, Viva! published footage of its investigation into the farm. > The video showed feral cats eating pigs alive, rotting corpses, and emaciated and sick pigs living in squalid conditions. Hence, I beg to differ.
- mindracer 4y ago£4500 fine, what is the point
- kennyadam 4y agoPathetic, isn't it? Comepletely toothless and in no way will make anyone else think twice about it.
- gw98 4y agoI lived near a pig farm in the UK for a couple of years in the 1990s. Seen some shit that turned me into a vegetarian ever since. Animal welfare is a fucking joke. It is literally only rolled out for the inspectors. The folk who work on the farms and the abattoirs end up dehumanised as well leading to stuff like this: https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-news/former-slaughterhouse-workers-killed-butchered-7801760 https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-news/former-slaug... . I don't judge people for eating meat. That's your decision. But I can't support this industry.
- technoooooost 4y agoThere are some small farms doing things right, their meat is 3-4x the price of normal meat, but worth it.
- xashor 4y agoNot saying that you actually believe this, but because of mentioning "small farms" I want to highlight the fallacy of believing that in general smaller farms are better for animal welfare: https://www.fondation-droit-animal.org/proceedings-aw/is-animal-welfare-better-on-smaller-farms/ https://www.fondation-droit-animal.org/proceedings-aw/is-ani... The abuse is often just different.
- steve_adams_86 4y agoSimilar to the comment above, I won’t judge people for eating meat (I did for 35 years). I wonder though, why is it that much more important to offer an animal slightly better welfare so we can murder it? Welfare is an arbitrary notion. Ultimately we raise these animals and ostensibly care about them, but our goal is only to profit off of their bodies and kill them as children, long before they would die naturally. I suppose all I’m saying is that it isn’t good welfare no matter how you slice it. These animals are slaves that get murdered in horrifying conditions 99.9% of the time. I tried to feel okay about it for a long time, but eventually came to realize that the meat I spent 2-4x on for better welfare was only marginally different from the stuff I found came from reprehensible conditions. I also discovered a lot of small farms which have better welfare on the farm still send their animals places where they’re exposed to completely abysmal suffering and death in their final hours. The depth of how bad these systems get is beyond what I ever imagined. Anyway, even as someone who used to shoot animals and spear fish, this whole journey made me realize: I don’t think there’s such a thing as ethical meat, and virtually no one is “doing it right”, as much as I was willing to pay for that and I wanted to believe in it. I often wonder why I came to that conclusion and others don’t. I almost feel like a crazy person some days, but I take real comfort in not supporting these systems.
- boosteri 4y agoWhy not publish the footage? Put it behind a warning or whatever but stop shying away from publishing the shyte that's going around the world. I very much doubt some words on a random website will sway anyone
- xashor 4y agoHere it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Jk26iKx5GU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Jk26iKx5GU If you eat meat, eggs, drink milk, you are supporting the things shown in the video.
- nells 4y agoAnimal abuse has never been so tasty!
- kennyadam 4y agoGrow up.
- steve_adams_86 4y agoWorth noting: killing the piglets by smashing their bodies against the floor or metal bars is considered humane in most of the world (including Canada, USA, Uk, etc). Similar to grinding live chicks, it’s a crude and sickening indicator of how deep animal abuse runs in agriculture.
- guilhas 4y agoBuy local organic if possible Also if you eat vegetables does not mean you support pesticides or natives exploitation, or natural ecosystems destruction....
- slothtrop 4y agoNot to mention, slaughtering of small animals by farming equipment used to reap grains.
- obayesshelton 4y agoWhy is this related to tech...

- steve_adams_86 4y agoHN is a place for curious conversation. What if you approach the topic from that perspective; what is curious and interesting about animal welfare? Did you know these things are going on, and that they’re actually quite common? What does acceptable animal welfare look like? There’s plenty to explore on this topic. There are also interesting ways technology has factored into animal welfare (I suppose a famous example would be the work done by Temple Grandin in the USA).
- freddealmeida 4y agoDepends on who is saying that. I say bullshit
- reqres 4y agoDonation link to the organisation that uncovered this abuse: https://viva.org.uk/join/ https://viva.org.uk/join/
- johtso 4y agoPigs.. in there? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BkKeMZboYY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BkKeMZboYY
- Joeboy 4y agoFirst time I've listened to that for a couple of decades I think. Thanks!
