- vidarh 4y agoWe don't know for sure, but we have multiple decades of seeing the global fertility rate consistently dropping since it peaked in 1965, so while the error bars in the UN population forecasts are fairly broad, it'd take a staggeringly massive and rapid change to prevent us from seeing global population drops within a century, not least because these things tends to have multi-decade lag. China started trying with the end of the One child policy in 2016, with a fertility rate then of 1.68. They've just managed to nudge it up to about 1.7, but with the total birth rate per 1,000 people still dropping, prompting them to now to not only allowing three children, but providing "supportive measures" to try to nudge it higher[1] In other words, changing this trajectory is not quick or easy, and so it's likely the projections will hold reasonably well.
