I think the main advantage of the conventional commits is that it promises to generate changelogs automatically. The disadvantage is that it hard to convince other people on the team, and need to use a local git pre-commit hooks, otherwise it's easy to forget to use a correct commit message, and the pain of re-writing the commit messages later ;( IMO the most important part of the commit message is to include the issue/ticket number (if relevant).
