Traits You Can Change, and Traits You Can’t
- karmakaze 4y ago> Traits You Can’t Change - Raw Intelligence You can’t make someone smarter. [...] - Emotional Reactivity - Natural speed For each of these, I either don't believe that it can't be changed or believe that it doesn't matter enough for it to be a key factor. Natural speed does change for a person with age, they get slower. That is more than made up for by not putting effort into dead ends--it multiplies when it prevents the team from spending extraneous time on dead ends, or being able to conclude discussions sooner with clear, concrete explanations of feasibility or applicability. The post itself lists under traits you can change: > Ability to Step Back and See the Big Picture That ability and some practice within a domain will make raw intelligence less of a concern. What I find more lacking is open-mindedness in research, discussions, and development. One that I rarely even see mentioned in places is thinking in concepts. Abstract thinking is often listed, but then gets restricted to implementation architectures. Being able to see deep concepts in even simple designs allow systems to evolve in ways that are easily adaptable in not so hard to expected ways if thought was specifically put into this from the start. I get the feeling this was written by a manager who doesn't have first hand understanding of how these factors matter when developing software at a high level.
