This dream you mention, I happen to be living it. Do it, or some variation of it, even if you would be just renting the dream for a while. Dreams are often conditions we put on choosing to be happy. Achieving a variation of a dream can show how many of the other things we did before were just palliative substitutes to taking the action that would result in change. I did a bunch of hobbies that were substitutes for meeting the condition I had put on my own happiness (living in the country), and they were productive and virtuous and give me a lot to do out here now, but they are less urgent to do now that I don't use them to relieve the suffering imposed by conditions I had chosen.
The difference now is I sit by a fire in a field watching the moon, typically with a mug of tea or a glass of red wine, listening to the deer and the crickets until the baying of the coyotes gets too close, giving deep consideration to questions pertaining to reason and existence. Then I write them as glib comments on HN. I can do anything I want, and yet still I do this. It's really pretty good. I highly recommend it. Stop dreaming and just change.
- savryn 4y agoAre you lonely doing this out there on your own? and are you sad to be outside the great game, so to speak, that maybe less smart, and certainly far less virtuous men will outcompete you on by merely showing up? I'm a woman trying to figure out the different natures of men that are drawn to go live in the woods, it's really hard to tell apart the Walden types from the Kaszynski types (as I rambled about here https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=32681450 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=32681450) and come to think of it, neither of those men had children... maybe there's a tiny sliver of deadness in both those ways of being, idk
- ihoafw8932 4y agoTotal long shot here, but I was reading your comment here https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33759326 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33759326 and really enjoyed the keen insight on the situation which inspired me to read more from you. Next I downloaded the book Focusing by Eugene Gendlin on your recommendation. Then I went further and saw this comment and the comment you linked to here and what you're looking for. HN doesn't seem to have a PM system, but let me know if you'd be willing to chat and I'll put my contact email in my profile.
- savryn 4y agoI only saw this two months after this thread locked... I've put my email in my profile if you still want to say hello P.s. there were no google results for your username but I kinda suspect "ihoafw" likely stands for In Hopes Of A Future Wife, not sure how I feel about that on a 3 year old account ;)

They have to come into town at some point for food, gas, liquor, and maybe ammo or the steakhouse. At least the ones who do come in, you don't have to worry about; the ones who don't ever come in, perhaps one should.
