For folks who don't know the author, Regina Ip has been in the top echelon's of HK politics since the late 1990s.
While this will understandably turn some people off, I think this piece is a good description in English of HK / China's story at this juncture.
Honest question: China has talked a lot lately about Marxism and ideology, how much of what the Central government actually does can be called Marxism or Communism? I'm not expert on Marxism / Communism and I find it interesting to see the contrast between this triumphal talk of this ideology with the way I've commonly seen it portrayed in the West as: "Tried and failed", "Look at the Soviet union", etc.
Also...for anyone game or interested in this who wants to say more: to the extent that China really is a communist/marxist country, how were they able to succeed where other such implementations of the same ideologies failed?

In 2012 Xi Jinping started rolling it back. Now we pretend not to imagine how many tens of millions he will murder.
