Elon Musk just force-ranked Twitter engineers and fired the bottom
- fullshark 4y agoWhats the source for this claim?
- peter_d_sherman 4y ago>"Is lines of code a good metric? Short answer: no." [...] Some of the most important jobs in an engineering team involve little code. They fine-tune configs, research arcane issues, and dive deep into underlying architecture. Working on these jobs can mean days of research just to make a few-line change. [...] I’ve personally worked on a few projects that touch these areas. The changes are sensitive, dangerous, and require a lot of skill to get right. If Elon laid off these small-code/big-impact engineers, then Twitter is in for a rough time."
- jleyank 4y agoWell, in one of my jobs I worked with a front-end developer to shift from "cloned code" to "using common libraries/functions". There was a macho "how many lines are YOU responsible for" ethos, and we laughed that we were so negative that we'd never be winning on this metric. Maybe if EM did abs(#lines code) would handle such refactoring? And as many others have pointed out again and again - the only one who gives a sh*t about your career path is you. Yeah, maybe some friends and family, but it's your ass so take care of it. Be known, and ideally be known as somebody who's ok to work with and gets sh*t done.
