Social Media Is Dead
- JetAlone 4y agoWoah I found this article: https://www.vice.com/en/article/jgpkw4/rotisserie-chicken-guy-interview https://www.vice.com/en/article/jgpkw4/rotisserie-chicken-gu... "Did you start to get really sick of eating the chickens at the end? And how did it impact your body? Oh yeah, my body was affected. I had constant cramping and my stomach was bloated. Like, you can kind of feel the pulse? Like when you run and you feel the pulse of your heart, it’s like my stomach is constantly throbbing and then my oesophagus is kind of like raw from the salt. I also lost about 14 or 15 pounds, which was weight that I didn't need to lose." How did we miss this story? That's the Real deal.

- GianFabien 4y agoLife support for social media has always been advertising. Before social media, people used to send group emails to their circle of friends. Even that was quickly besieged by advertising - Google, Yahoo, HotMail, etc.
- chatterhead 4y agoWhoever wrote this is clearly intelligent, has a solid worldview, and a vocabulary too big for their own good. There is already a Federal social media and realID platform being discussed to address many of the issues the author brings up and they conflate what an interconnected network is with the World Wide Web. It's hard to watch the scales fall from peoples eyes. Just make it more concise next time.
- est 4y agoIMHO there are two ends about "social media" On one end, everything is about identity. People build the portfolio, there's influencers, celebs, career networking etc. Everything is about the "character", as described in Karl Popper's World 2. On the other end, everything is about interest. I don't care if a developer is a Trump supporter as long as his code is open and politics-free. I want to "like" a picture of the beautiful natural world shared on IG regardless of OP's sexual orientation. Everything is about "ideas", as described in Karl Popper's World 3. In the past these two ends are mix and merged in one "social media world", now it seems that these two worlds are disengaging from each other. For platform owners, you have to choose only one. Choose wisely.
- parasubvert 4y agoThis is big word fluff and wrong. Counter example: Reddit, not mentioned once because it invalidates his hypothesis. HN arguably too. Also, Discord is a hive of activity with an amazing bot scene. Mastodon is also starting to really take off and isn’t all that bad, people just forgot about USEnet and BBS’. Social media isn’t dead, yes people like dumb consumption apps too, there’s no grand shift.
- lakomen 4y agoI wish they'd bring back Google+ in its early form. I really liked that place. It was all the web people in one place, news straight from the horses mouth, an open platform. I'm not interested at all in what's currently being offered. I have always disliked Facebook, it created nothing but problems in my life. Twitter is for the permanently outraged hipsters. Instagram is for girls. Discord is for the angry and disrespectful youth. The rest doesn't matter. Google+ was for techies, developers and creators. And originally the design was communication centric, then they changed it to be post centric with comments being hidden away. That was the point where it became shit and I didn't visit anymore. They also should've gone through with the real name Google+ to YouTube binding. The best part was no censorship. HN isn't really a replacement for that. If any "social network", the term is still ridiculous, would emerge it would be a non-censoring platform operated by public money without spyware or ads. You know just how the roads are public property paid by the taxpayers, the social network should be public property as well. And jobs should be public too, not just a limited group of people working on it. But public contracts.
