What's an example of a successful profitable DTC startup?
The Peleton story has been well documented, all the mattress companies (casper, purple, etc...) are perennial money losers, AllBirds loses tens of millions a quarter selling $100 sneakers, Warby Parker still hasn't found profitability, the list goes on.
The strategy seems to be to apply the "spend a lot on getting new customers" model of SaaS to the consumer retail market, but unlike SaaS, selling mattresses in a box isn't a monthly annuity stream for years. It's a one time payment and if they like it enough, you get another one time payment in 10 years.
