Wouldn't it be more apt to say they're "chroot delivered via a package management system?" My big gripe with containers is how insecure many of them are, and how ignored the problem is because it is "someone else's problem." But even I won't pretend that taking a powerful tool like chroot (and or cgroups, etc) and then packaging them for rapid deployment/rollbacks/etc isn't key to their popularity.
