The world won't exactly rush over to stop Iran from killing it's own future, so good for these 227 old men for putting themselves first once again. If you think about this is how the entire world works, and somehow these old men can always bear the shame.
- wahern 4y agoDo you have a reference for all 227 being men? According to Wikipedia ~6-8% of Parliamentary lawmakers are women. It's certainly possible all 227 were men out of the 290 total; but one's sex doesn't necessarily dictate one's politics.
- Comevius 4y agoCurrently 16 of the 290 are women or 5.9%, and sex absolutely has everything to do with it. It's a patriarchal society and women lack many basic rights and are treated horribly. The protest is a reaction to a 22-year old woman killed for wearing an improper hijab, in violation of Iran's mandatory hijab law.
- wahern 4y agoTaking for granted that sex or ethnicity dictate how someone votes is responsible for countless political failures in actually protecting the rights of women and others. The undercurrents supporting hard-right politics (and even "patriarchal" politics, or any kind of politics, really) are complex. Plus, I was legitimately curious.
- Comevius 4y agoIran doesn't have free elections, and it's ruled by a Supreme Leader, who is the highest political and religious authority. It's a patriarchal society. Iran is ranked 140 out of 144 for gender parity and things only got worst for women there in recent years.
