Starlink announces 1TB monthly cap, users who go over will get slower speeds
- Axien 4y agoThey will not get slower speeds, just deprioritized access. They are not guaranteed fast speeds … a big difference.
- grogers 4y ago> During times of peak network congestion, users will be able to engage in typical Internet activity like email, online shopping, or even downloading an SD movie This makes it seems like they are at least given a fair slice of the aggregate bandwidth, just a smaller fraction than a prioritized user would get. If it was truly deprioritized you might get 0 bandwidth if the channel was already full with prioritized traffic. That might actually be the case, but that's much worse than just lower speeds.
- olyjohn 4y agoRegardless, 1TB is a fucking joke. Can't even do an off-site backup of my hard drive.
- AtlasBarfed 4y agoOff peak doesn't count?
- jtode 4y agoRural user here. You have no idea how good a deal it was, or what I had to settle for before starlink showed up. Yes, it's limited service, from a very limited network, and it's there to be where previously there was nothing. That said, there's a company deploying fibre in my area as we speak, so as soon as they finish running the cable to my door I'm gone. But they were crucial to my being able to work in the last few years.
- typedef_struct 4y ago1TB/mo is like 380B/s...shouldn't it have to be advertised as such? Burstable to whatever speed is offered.
- lgats 4y ago1 TB / month = 380 KB / second
- sneak 4y ago$0.25 per gigabyte for overage, to low earth orbit and back. Someone should tell my mobile wireless carrier.
- lgats 4y ago$250/TB
