Iran Votes to Execute 14k Protesters, Says Rebels Need 'Hard Lesson
- Comevius 4y agoThe world won't exactly rush over to stop Iran from killing it's own future, so good for these 227 old men for putting themselves first once again. If you think about this is how the entire world works, and somehow these old men can always bear the shame.
- wahern 4y agoDo you have a reference for all 227 being men? According to Wikipedia ~6-8% of Parliamentary lawmakers are women. It's certainly possible all 227 were men out of the 290 total; but one's sex doesn't necessarily dictate one's politics.
- Comevius 4y agoCurrently 16 of the 290 are women or 5.9%, and sex absolutely has everything to do with it. It's a patriarchal society and women lack many basic rights and are treated horribly. The protest is a reaction to a 22-year old woman killed for wearing an improper hijab, in violation of Iran's mandatory hijab law.
- wahern 4y agoTaking for granted that sex or ethnicity dictate how someone votes is responsible for countless political failures in actually protecting the rights of women and others. The undercurrents supporting hard-right politics (and even "patriarchal" politics, or any kind of politics, really) are complex. Plus, I was legitimately curious.
- Comevius 4y agoIran doesn't have free elections, and it's ruled by a Supreme Leader, who is the highest political and religious authority. It's a patriarchal society. Iran is ranked 140 out of 144 for gender parity and things only got worst for women there in recent years.
- c-baby 4y agoThis news leaves me speechless. I can't imagine the torment felt by the arrested protesters and their families. Those fighting for their rights are unspeakably brave.
- mensetmanusman 4y ago14k, largely students, crazy
- groceryheist 4y agoIf true, (is newsweek a reliable source for Iran coverage?) this would be an immensely risky and possibly stupid move. If they will kill you for protesting what deters you from terrorism and assassination?
- chatterhead 4y agoThe fact that they will likely take it out on your family, friends and anyone suspected of knowing about your actions. Not to mention the shit that happens before they kill you. Man is a predator ape. Don't get it twisted.
- groceryheist 4y agoMass executions lead to only 2 outcomes: total fear or total war.
- tptacek 4y agoNewsweek isn't a reliable source for any coverage. It essentially went under in 2013 and its brand assets were acquired by a company with deep ties to "The Community", a Korean religious sect (parallels to UPI and the Unification Church). Regardless of how you feel about "The Community", the Newsweek you're seeing today has essentially no relationship to the historical Newsweek. It's always worth checking the bylines on Newsweek articles and trying to trace back where the writers came from. For awhile, most of the Newsweek stories I saw were written by people with SEO backgrounds, not journalists. (You might reasonably be fine with this, too, but the branding is misleading).

- CamperBob2 4y agoI think my first clue was when they "outed" Satoshi Nakamoto as a completely-random retired Asian guy in SoCal. Guess that happened after the acquisition by the Korean sect. I hadn't heard about that.
- Sakos 4y agoDoes the parliament have the authority for this vote to be enforced? How do politics work in Iran? edit: Found an article with more detail here, I think, if it's referencing the same event? I'm not sure, tbh https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/nov/08/iranian-leaders-resist-growing-demands-for-referendum-on-constitution https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/nov/08/iranian-leader...
- fnordpiglet 4y agoAmazing when people decide gasoline is good for putting out fires.
- joshstrange 4y agoI hope the protesters teach the Iranian parliament some "Hard Lessons". It seems like this move will only anger the protesters further, it's not like the Iranian regime has been treating them with kid gloves so far and this is a massive step over the line. I can't imagine what those families might be thinking/feeling. In their place I feel like it'd motivate me to take a few steps beyond "protesting" if I had family/friends who had been arrested, and now sentenced, en masse, without trial, to death.
- rcarr 4y agoCivil war incoming…

- stnmtn 4y agoIs there another source for this? I wish badly for this article to be misrepresenting the situation
- stjohnswarts 4y agoIf 1 death incited this small rebellion, I don't think the Iranian parliament would survive this event should they actually start such naziesque deathcamps. What a fucking mess.

- Normille 4y agoGotta love modern journalism. Go on Twatter and grab a load of tweets. Put them on a page and then write them out underneath again.
