FWIW, my Shimanos use mineral oil. There's a little funnel you attach at the handlebars, and flick the lines to burp them. I've had this bike for a decade, and I can't remember the last time I had to do more than that to keep the lever feel strong. The pads are held in place by a cotter key, so it's impossible to misalign them. You couldn't move them if you wanted to.
