They made a material that doesn't exist on Earth
- hinkley 4y agoThey made a material found in meteorites that can replace rare earth magnets with nickel and iron.
- skywal_l 4y agoIf I read the article correctly, it should be: '[...] that could replace rare earth magnets with nickel and iron.' This is a call to funding type of article promising one of those many right-around-the-corner technical revolutions that might never happen.
- _tom_ 4y agoClickbait. Please provide a title that says who and what material. "Scientists synthesize material that may replace rare earth magnets" ("who" was two universities, so didn't fit a title).
- eesmith 4y agoAnd ... not quite correct. The paper at https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/advs.202204315 https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/advs.202204315 even says "Tetrataenite has been found as a terrestrial mineral". That (second) paper, at https://www.degruyter.com/document/doi/10.2138/am-2015-5061/html https://www.degruyter.com/document/doi/10.2138/am-2015-5061/... , says: > Here we report the characteristics of terrestrial tetrataenite from an ophiolite-hosted Ni-bearing magnetite body from the Indo-Myanmar ranges, northeast India. Although the mineral assemblage surrounding it is very similar to that found in the meteorites, the postulated cooling regimes cannot be similar. The mineral is formed as a consequence of hydrothermal alteration of ferromagnesian minerals of the olivine and pyroxene groups.
- simonblack 4y agothey managed to manufacture, in a lab, a material that does not exist naturally on Earth What crap. Half the stuff that's made today 'does not exist naturally on Earth'. When was the last time you saw natural polystyrene? Or natural bone china? or natural stainless steel? Or natural cellophane? Etc, etc, etc.
