Sometimes enough people invest their focus in overcoming the hurdle to push the needle to a point where network effect "forces" the rest (if they want to stay in whatever loop motivates their social media participation). Can't say mastodon will do this but if you asked me last week I would've agreed with you, yet what I'm seeing this week is unprecedented.
