One key ingredient is that you need to find amusement in manipulating symbols and feeding them to a compiler to see what happens. I have tried instructing my brother and my ex-gf to learn in the same way I did, and they both failed, and both because they needed to learn to program, but had not real interest in it. They are both equally smart, so it has little to do with intellect.
