5. Fun! It was fun! It still is!
6. Curiosity
7. Trying to be responsible (you would not believe how many people just dont f'ing care, if you're not one of them this already puts you ahead)
Non-reasons: Formal CS - yeah, got some (msc-level edu), learned most of my useful CS before/outside that tbh (with the only exception being database logic and loads & loads of sql). That's not to say Computer Science is not important - it is - but formal CS isn't)
- SkyMarshal 4y agoCuriosity + Responsible is a good combination. In my early Java projects I ended up building increasingly elaborate Try/Catch/Throw error handling flow control, to the point I was getting close to EHDD - Error Handling Driven Development. I wanted to build systems that could gracefully handle every possible error. Trying to figure out better error handling architectures led me to the functional world, namely Lisp, Erlang, and Haskell. Erlang's fault tolerance, and Haskell's error elimination via type system, were total revelations for me. And that's when the fun really started!
