- raydiatian 4y ago> (how some TikTok users reportedly claimed that the app was capable of) “showing you who you’ve always been,” This… this blew my mind. It’s not shocking that some people are this stupid. It is shocking that this is considered journalism-worthy.
- karmakaze 4y agoI just saw on an investigative TV program that the TikTok in China has different algorithms for their domestic version. In that version, it limits screen-time for children under 14 by default and recommends educational content. The export version has screen-time controls but most people use defaults. When children in China are asked what they want to be, #1 is astronaut. In the US it's social media influencer. Play that thought experiment a couple generations.

Pretty sure that in the Soviet Union (and early Russia), the answer was also "astrounaut". At least it felt that way, when I was growing up there, and it certainly was the answer for me. Didn't end up leading them that far though. So I am not much worried about that "astrounaut" answer in China today being much of an indicator of anything meaningful either.
