OneDrive Ad in Windows 11 Logout Menu
- Ecstatify 4y agoBought my first Mac this year, sick of Microsoft injecting adverts everywhere. Integrating teams into everything, have the learnt nothing from Skype.
- _boffin_ 4y agoI really love your comment since you’re championing macOS instead of Windows due to the advertising present in the Windows ecosystem. At the same time, Apple is heavily expanding their advertising presence across their platforms. I’m certain that Apple’s advertising will be less obvious, but it’s still going to be there nonetheless.
- Ecstatify 4y agoWe’ll see with apple. Hopefully they won’t be as obnoxious as Microsoft. Windows is getting so bloated with adverts, teams integrations. Most of the OEMs hardware is junk with a load of spyware installed for good measure. Linux may be the last bastion of the free world.
- mey 4y agoIf you don't wish to use iCloud, but do use the App Store, you may find this work around helpful. https://osxdaily.com/2021/10/30/dont-use-icloud-how-to-remove-start-using-icloud-notifications-on-mac/ https://osxdaily.com/2021/10/30/dont-use-icloud-how-to-remov...
- nicbou 4y agoIt's not a lifetime commitment
- boobsbr 4y agoJoke's on Apple, I'm still on El Capitan.
- faeriechangling 4y agoLinux Distros are the only way to get an OS without advertising built in.
- _aavaa_ 4y agoTell that to Canonical: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1434512/how-to-get-rid-of-ubuntu-pro-advertisement-when-updating-apt https://askubuntu.com/questions/1434512/how-to-get-rid-of-ub...
- safety1st 4y agoThe fact that this plus that one time years ago when they added Amazon search to the main menu (uninstallable with one command) are the worst things that thousands of angry FOSS extremists have found, shows you what a great and ad-free OS Ubuntu really is.
- somat 4y agoThe cool thing is not only was there a lot of push-back on this sort of behavior, which is great, make sure you let companies know you don't like being turned into the product. but linux itself is pretty great at avoiding lock-in when a company does this. not only are there 50, "almost but not quite the same" distributions you can trivialy switch to, there is probably a distribution whos mission statement is "X" but without the ads.
- Bright_Machine 4y agoI understand your decision. But still switching from one proprietary OS to another does not help in long run. There's no guarantee that Apple will not become another adtech company. Linux seems to be the long term fix for all of us.
- mmwelt 4y agoDoesn't Apple do similar things, trying to get people to use iCloud?
- rochak 4y agoOh Microsoft!
- wtallis 4y agoI've completely given up on left-clicking the start button. Right-clicking it gets me to most of the important system stuff (shut down, terminal, settings), and for third-party apps not pinned to the taskbar, I just use the keyboard to search.
- Bright_Machine 4y agoWhy not give up on Windows and switch to any of popular Linux distros?
- nicbou 4y agoMacOS is also really good if you don't want to fiddle too much... so long as you're okay with the hardware options.
- ohm 4y agoUse open-shell instead and customize it to your liking https://open-shell.github.io/Open-Shell-Menu/ https://open-shell.github.io/Open-Shell-Menu/
- plaguepilled 4y agoWindows 11 is an insult to the user's attention. @anyone frustrated and willing to try Linux, give Fedora Linux a go. It's a really solid pick for first time users and has great security defaults. Some people will be nervous because Fedora used to be a 'slightly harder' distro but this is no longer true IMO and I would actually consider it easier for many cases (in particular: stock GNOME is way more consistent than Ubuntu gnome). If your friend is nagging you to start with an Ubuntu distro, Kubuntu is a really good one for ex Windows users. The KDE desktop actually pioneered some of the desktop patterns that Windows has adopted (and of course vice versa).
- CA0DA 4y agoAs an ex Windows user, I like Linux Mint.
- plaguepilled 4y agoI used to recommend Linux Mint (and have converted some friends with it!) But no longer do so, as their attitude to security is a bit lax. One issue I often lament is that their main desktop environment, Cinnamon, is still on X.org only. This would be fine if they sorted the processes being able to see each others windows problem, but they haven't AFAIK.
- unameeh 4y agoFedora has ads too. Firefox is bloated with their search engine, bookmarks, and unique useragent string.
- plaguepilled 4y agoFedora has ads? Edit: Somehow missed your details of Firefox - that kinda makes sense IMO, since those bookmarks are useful for a new user and help them find the community.
- CountGeek 4y agoI have been happy with Ubuntu Budgie - https://ubuntubudgie.org/ https://ubuntubudgie.org/
