Chinese devs are storing 1000s of eBooks on GitHub and NPM
- fragmede 4y agoGitHub is considered unblockable in China by some*, so this seems like a natural progression. The only question I ask is if sharing this news here is likely to negatively impact the ability of ApacheCN to continue providing this service. *https://restofworld.org/2021/github-microsoft-in-china-how-long/ https://restofworld.org/2021/github-microsoft-in-china-how-l...
- r_singh 4y agoThat’s why I favourited instead of liked
- withinboredom 4y agoYou can also store this stuff in pretty much any comment/free-text blob on the internet. Even in profile photos. It’s just less searchable.
- woojoo666 4y agoI wonder if at some point, China will block https for regular users (but keep it for secure communications between gov agencies, banks, etc). So every residential area will only receive http, which the government can then censor by content, like blocking certain github pages while allowing others.
- Yaa101 4y agoNow that is nice, spoiling it for the readers by outing this scheme. This means that this hole will be patched, only because somebody wants a scoop.
- exabrial 4y agoMy take: in eastern societies, the concept of intellectual property, ergo copyright, does not seem to exist in the same fashion as western ones. Source: I worked for Alibaba and spent a lot of time overseas prior to 2018.
- powerapple 4y agocopyright is a western thing. Printing was invented in China, but commercially variable printing is a western thing (latin, English). Because of the Chinese writing system, you can never print a book cheaply. Books were spread verbally, some are handwritten copy were sold for the copying, not for authoring.
- vagrantJin 4y agoBetter not get this to the front page.
- phantomathkg 4y agoIsn't it extremely sad in 2022 the world still need to circumvent governement to read?
- musicale 4y agoThankfully we live in a free country where we can vote for the various government officials who determine which books must be removed from school libraries and which internet libraries must be blocked or shut down.
- rsj_hn 4y agoThis reminds me of a video I saw, in which a French father unwraps a birthday present for his young son, and it's a used copy of Mein Kampf. He turns to the boy's grandfather "What is this??" "It's what he wanted" "He said Mine Craft. Mine Craft" "I thought he said 'Mein Kampf'" "Mine Craft. Mine Craft! Where did you get this?!"
