Many billions are spent manipulating us into believing the perfectly usable things we have are inadequate and only the new and shiny version of it will make us feel whole and/or will attract attention from the opposite sex. Advertising works, hence why many of us SWEs have cushy high paid jobs at tech companies that sell ads.
