A few weeks after the 2020 lockdowns, an apartment down the hall caught fire at 4am, and I thought the whole building was a goner.
It blazed for a good long time and the firefighters were right on task, knocked down the flames and embers and sparks, and wet everything down. Two apartments were a loss on the third floor, plus four more below them due to water damages.
So all in all, 5-6 small families were displaced (1BR units) and it was a tragedy for some, yes, but it could've been a lot worse. My landlord nearly had to shut off my power, just as I was about to start a new WFH job! (They didn't shut it off after all. It would've been a disaster if I couldn't cook anything or use my fridge.)
But it drove home the fragility of our existence here, and insult to injury during those nasty COVID lockdowns, let me tell you.
