Ask HN: Recently hired for my first job in IT. What tips do you wish you knew?
After nearly seven years in retail I finally landed a job in IT. As of now I’m working as an “IT Support Specialist” provisioning and managing user accounts with many opportunities to grow.
Are there any tips/tricks/hacks/warnings the netizens of HN have to offer for establishing a professional IT career?
- sarcasmatwork 4y agoKeep learning new skills/tech so you can advance + making more $$. Learn to code... Python, bash for Linux, Or Powershell on Windows side for example.
- doublepg23 4y agoAbsolutely. My homelab was a big reason I got the job, I’ve done a lot of basic sysadmin tasks on them. Funny enough I may need to set up a Windows Server install here, that’s my main blind spot after having used Linux for a decade. My programming skills are definitely rusty, I can hack together bash and Python but I wouldn’t consider myself fluent in anything - even with years of false starts to “finally learn how to program”. Closest I’ve gotten is Guile Scheme which is obviously a small language.
