I don't know if it is fair to say "well behind." There are certainly mssing features, such as CUDA and proper video encoding, but using an amd gpu on linux is a seamless experience. Using nvidia cards requires their proprietary driver, and it doesn't always work well.
- RealStickman_ 4y agoVideo encoding works fine using VAAPI with their open source driver. Sadly there are lots of programs that don't implement VAAPI.

- RealStickman_ 4y agoI can't say much on performance, though from what I've read online, AMD's video encoding engine is usually branded as the worst of the three. Supported codecs depend on what generation of video decoder your graphics card contains.
