Lot of vertical fridge inefficiency could be simply resolved by having glass door, so you could check content without opening the door and then just quickly go for things you want. But yeah it's convenience over efficiency and it would require also a lot of empty space above fridge which can be ulitized inb much better way, while there is hardly any space wasted above my ~210cm tall fridge and I still use the top to store some things which I could not to with chest fridge.
