Still Microsoft, although after a change of tactics. They don't want to kill Linux anymore, but something even more dangerous: controlling it by making their one the accepted corporate standard ("Nobody was ever fired for using MS Linux", etc).
The day they push some proprietary or oddly licensed technology to be integrated into their Linux is the day a thousands alerts should be raised into the community. Then will come software that runs only, or runs better, on their Linux.
WSL was the first step: making something with both Microsoft and Linux in its name accepted by the community.

- lmm 4y agoYep. And everything their sleeper agent Pottering wrote.
- naikrovek 4y agoUEFI was created by an alliance of 12 companies, 11 of whom are not Microsoft, and Intel began the work. Again, not Microsoft. TianoCore is an open source reference implementation of UEFI maintained by Intel; there's no proprietary Microsoft stuff in there. Microsoft seek to ease development for users who either choose Windows or who are forced to use Windows by an employer. there's no "play" here, no extending or extinguishing. They want, like any reasonable developer would, a better world for software developers.
- rnd0 4y ago>Still Microsoft Here, here. I haven't seen anything yet that isn't straight out of the MS playbook on this.
- zbird 4y agoDid you mean 'hear, hear', or is 'here, here' something I missed?
- naikrovek 4y agoexactly what has been extended or extinguished, here? What kernel versions belong to Microsoft? has Dell, or anyone else, been told to stop selling laptops with Linux in favor of Windows with WSL under threat that they won't be able to sell Windows laptops anymore? exactly what world are you seeing, because it isn't the one I live on.
- __s 4y agoMariner isn't being pushed for others, it's a way for Microsoft to mitigate risk of supply chain attacks in their services currently using other distros
- RulerOf 4y agoThat sounds a lot like Oracle Linux, but nobody really cares.
