They recently overwhelmingly voted on a new Family Code law [0], one of the most progressive laws to be passed.
And if you're interested in how democracy and elections work in Cuba, here is a pretty short and very informative clip (13min) [1] explaining the Cuban democratic system.

- seibelj 4y agoWow so I can vote against the communist party? And protest the dictatorship without getting disappeared / bullet in head?
- dismantlethesun 4y agoCuba is essentially as democratic as China, which the US doesn’t embargo. You can’t protest the government as a concept nor any specific members of the top leadership. However, within reason you can call out localized corruption and give your input to local government initiatives. Everything on the national level is beyond the scope of a normal citizens questioning.

"Isn't sufficiently democratic" is not and has never been a reason we're sanctioning them. Their seizing capital (including, IIRC, foreign-owned), cold war proxy bullshit, and domestic politics (a bunch of Cuban ex-capitalists ended up in Florida) are the reasons, I'm pretty sure.
- seibelj 4y agoWow that's so great what a paradise of freedom
- brookst 4y agoDid someone suggest that, or are you just straw manning? All I saw was a suggestion that Cuba's political environment, including lack of sufficient democracy, can't explain the United States animus in general and sanctions in particular. Because we have much more accepting policies for a whole lot of countries that are worse. Why pick this one moderately-bad actor to go metaphorically nuclear on when we're fine with everyone else? Hint: the answer is in Florida, not Cuba.
