"To make a book is to actualize its ideal space-time sequence by means of the creation of a parallel sequence of signs, be it linguistic or other."
I don't know what this means. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
- SkyMarshal 4y agoYeah, wouldn't it be "sequential sequence of signs", since (afaik) most people read words (signs?) sequentially, not in parallel.
- bombcar 4y agoI think parallel is supposed to mean that the whole book exists at once, each page parallel to the others, instead of like an audio book or tv where it's sequential. Whatever it means, it's pretentious bullshit. And I'm trained in pretentious bullshit so I can recognize it when I see it.
- itronitron 4y ago>> it's pretentious bullshit Skimming through this gave me flashbacks to the weekly newsletters sent out by my children's previous school.
- mdp2021 4y ago> And I'm trained in pretentious How can we know you are not just a dismisser.
- mdp2021 4y agoI think (see my attempted translation nearby) that the relation of parallelism is between the ideal sequence of sub-ideas and its actualization in a definite text.
- mdp2021 4y agoYou certainly do read in parallel: a parallelism between the the code processed and its interpretation developing in your mind. (Similarly to that "writing in parallel" which I am guessing is the context of the quotation proposed.)
- ip26 4y agoI just can't tell if it's pontification or a performative shibboleth.
- mdp2021 4y agoI will attempt translation: "There exist specific Ideas (Platonic sense), which may become some text and then some concrete book, which have a structure consisting in a "development", made of "successions" and "directions": such ideas can be brought from "indetermination" to some decided form through a sequence of signs that follow (in the concrete plane) the said same structure (in the ideal plane)". Not exactly the most insightful of insights, to my interpretation. It could work as a premise. Only: where did you find such quotation? It is not in the submitted page as I received it.
- asciii 4y agoCan you cite a source for that quote? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
