We use the "PLUGABLE 2.5G USB-C AND USB TO ETHERNET ADAPTER"[1] on M1 Max machines without problem (and I would consider the need to install any extra software a problem). We've used this plugged directly into the Mac, and also plugged into Thunderbolt docks from OWN and CalDigit, and have not had any issues.
