Green tea and resveratrol reduce Alzheimer's plaques in lab tests
- jleyank 4y agoProblem is, the biological model of Alzheimer’s isn’t panning out. They have drugs that reduce plaques but they don’t improve peoples conditions. Seems they need new models to try again. Billions have been thrown in this hole, but it’s such a huge market they’ll keep doing it if anything shows promise.
- gumby 4y agoIt's not even clear if the plaque is a cause, side effect, or even the body's attempt at fighting back. This was discussed a few months ago on HN: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=32183302 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=32183302
- refurb 4y agoGSK paid $720M for a resveratrol company back in 2008 and recently dumped all development due to weak efficacy and renal toxicity risks. - chewz 4y agohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpxQoGk_ryg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpxQoGk_ryg and more on his channel
- rongopo 4y agoNo. A youtube channel is not a legitimate source. It is a channel. For a source see https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-017-03635-7 https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-017-03635-7
- hulitu 4y agoFor me, the difference between youtube and nature.com is quiet low. Nature.com declares a "breaktrough" every other day.
- rongopo 4y agoJust an example, the wise way is to read scientific research and reviews showing both sides and form a grounded opinion.
- chewz 4y agoThe fact is that the owner of this particular chanel is MD and the channel format is host talking while citations from relevant scientific research papers are highlighted on screen. Better then Nature..
- k_sze 4y agoTrying to find occurrences of “mouse”/“mice” in Alzheimer’s articles as soon as they show up on HN frontpage is now a meme of mine. PS: there is none this time, which is progress, I guess?
- tsol 4y agoThey're lab tests, which means they are just testing in a petri dish. These ones are easy to use human cells with-- but they tell you very little about the effect of a human taking it at a reasonable dose
