I think this story is both a serious incident for Taronga Zoo (in that they took and continue to take the breach seriously), but also completely overblown in the headlines.
The headlines make it seem like guests were fleeing in horror and lions were running around everywhere. They were kinda just hanging out on the exterior of their enclosure behind a 2nd fence (that would certainly not contain a full-grown lion intent on escape), and four of the five lions were cubs.
The interesting part for me is that after the initial investigations, they weren't able to determine how the lions had managed to get out. I assumed they'd have plenty of security camera footage covering all angles of this event. I also wonder if it was the cubs who managed to get out first.
