I see that as trouble, too, but not as an trouble impossible to overcome. Of course, I wouldn't wear a VR headset to communicate with my friends. So, that's where I see the others come into play.
We need lighter hardware! We need hardware that let us participate in the real world. Outside of our homes. With seeing what's happening in front of us IRT.
That's the case with mobiles. You can use all the apps you want withouts being robbed. Or: At least you see it coming ;)
So. We need a lifestyle product. Apple is said to be investing into development of such a gadget. Amazon & Snapchat trying to get into the AR buying experience (which in fact is the pre-factor to VR)
We have Samsung. We have Sony. We have tencent and other companies in Asia.
At some point in near time, I see a big push from these players.
But. And that's important. The mobile have the advantage being interoperable with different gadgets of other manufacturers.
As long each of the players wants to wall-gardening it's system, as long meta will have problems. But they are a part of the problem with forced Facebook Account and things like that.
Meta need to open up the hardware to others and let others develop solutions which are out of scope / "not interested in" for meta.
And that should be explicit NOT THE METAVERSE.
(For example VR how-to's, cooking, mapping of homes for furniture, and so on.. )
So, first open up. Then hardware. Then trust & usage building and binding.
Just like with the service of some retailers, where they offer to analyze your feet and offer you the fitting shoes.
This service is being used not rarely. What about the furniture sellers? Could they offer such a service?
:)
