I use an old EeePC901 with a broken screen with two 4TB USB drives plugged into it for my remote backups. Built-in UPS. Though I measured it last night and was slightly surprised to find it using 19W while idle.
- dspillett 4y ago16W of that could be the drives if they are not dropping into a low power state, depending on which drives you have.
- mnw21cam 4y agoYeah, I was thinking that. However a quick google says that the average laptop drive uses around 4W when accessing and 1.5W when idle. I'm also measuring at the mains point, and I'm not sure how efficient the transformer is - they're usually only about 75% efficient. I'm loathe to have the drives regularly spin down. That sounds like a good way to make them wear out quicker. Though spinning up twice a day might not be too bad.
- dspillett 4y agoYeah, I wouldn't expect >10W from a pair of 2.5" drives.
