Conservatism, by definition, opposes change. It disapproves of new ideas and philosophical innovation in favour of tradition. Universities have always been hotbeds for change, research, vanguard and protest against the standard. I'm not surprised there's so little conservatism there; it's an environment that attracts open-mindedness, not people who shy away from deep analytical reconsideration. For the latter, there's churches.
