I wonder how much of this is due to getting old vs actual complexity. When I started I was literally memorising the language of the day and I definitely mastered it. Code was flowing on the screen without interruption. Nowadays I just get stuff done; I know the concepts are similar, I just need to find the specifics and I'm off to implement. It's more akin to a broken faucet and it definitely affects my perception of modern development.
