I find it hard to see the point of Sony complaining about CoD being too important. According to Activision, CoD MW sold 33 million copies. If we say that each console (including PC) is equally distributed, that is 11 mill copies sold per platform, Sony has an install base of about 150 mill consoles vs 60 mill on Xbox, so not even 1 in 10 people that have a PS bought the best CoD in the last 5 years, yet they complain that it would make them loose players. I find it hard to see every one of those 11 mill players ditching their current games library and trophies to play only one game.
Then they complain about Game Pass becoming too good value and that they can't compete with that but they are locking third party titles under exclusivity deals and setting clauses with publishers prohibiting from putting their games on GP (especially JP publishers where they are a defacto monopoly)
Then there is the matter that CoD is nothing special overall, a military shooter with cinematic campaign and nice graphics, something that a good Developer team (like the ones Sony have) can replicate with enough founding.
- Kukumber 4y agoMicrosoft is building a game service / cloud monopoly in front of our eyes, them buying every studios possible and pushing FOMO/FUD about their potential acquisition hurts the industry and should be a warning for the EU antitrust Worse, they don't innovate as much as Sony (handheld consoles, controller with haptic feedback and VR for example) Microsoft is pumping billions into their services to buy studios, seduce developers and selling the console as a $200 loss [1]; and yet players are not interested if we look at the sales data Activision should remain independent; Microsoft has billions of dollar, they don't need to take the industry as a hostage to enforce their poor culture to everyone [1] - https://kotaku.com/xbox-series-x-s-phil-spencer-loss-200-raising-prices-1849725059 https://kotaku.com/xbox-series-x-s-phil-spencer-loss-200-rai...
