- dontbenebby 4y agoWar on fun my ass, the entire Bay Area tolerates too much (LOOKING AT YOU TOO BERKLEY. PUT SOME SHORTS ON AT LEAST.) The reason I never struggled to apply to STANFORD like I did say, CARNEGIE MELLON, is that the latter lacks a football team. I cannot emphasize enough how much combining atheletics and academics perverts both. I'm glad I went to PITT, where we all collectively were like "We're gonna say we need to carry knives to open those stupid plastic cases, bullets go through the wall, we're democratic socialists not... full on sociopaths". (You haven't truly lived until you did a stroll through Oakland, grinning like some boomer, declaring to anyone who questions your behavior in the slightest "Oh, don't worry... I'm an alumni" in a fake Harvard voice.)
- gedy 4y agoThis is a sincere comment and not trolling, but I wonder if this cultural shift is an unexpected side effect of more women in leadership positions. Women (in general) tend be less risk-taking physically and more nurturing and cautious. Seems our organizations would follow as more women are in leadership.
- devwastaken 4y agoRemember, uni's are their own isolated cities. They are unelected by the population they make the laws for. They can eject anyone for "not fitting". They can continually harass you with campus mall cops and frequently do. Mask mandates were used as a method to further gain powers, and the precedent put the idea in the heads of admins that they are god. A classical trading freedom for fear taught by any introductory civics. When my local campus here fails to provide adequate education, there's no statements from them. When they collect tax dollars and waste them, there's no statement. But if people are not masking for even a second the administration is rabid. If someone dare ask "is DEI actually working?" they are forced to apologize. It's all Politics, look to who's paying them, there's a particular color involved.
- yummypaint 4y agoThis is the iron law of beurocracy at work. It's a much broader problem than just student life and touches many universities. Ultimately the faculty need to stand up and take back their institutions from administrators.
