is it really fair to blame America? we are now a net exporter, although obv oil isn't perfectly fungible for purposes of refining and petrochemical production. but the real problem is not America, its other nations who can't produce as much as they consume. if we block saudi arabia and opec then the issue would be other buyers driving up prices for American consumers despite us net exporting.
besides europe won't even enforce many restrictions on iran. no way would they get on board with saudi arabia (esp since it would likely mean open more broadly).
- pjc50 4y agoAs per my other post https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33385983 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33385983, it's the war on Iran that causes the US to prop up Saudi. Neither is really on our side.
- ilyt 4y ago> is it really fair to blame America? Absolutely, much of that shitshow in middle east is directly or indirectly thru the actions of US government
- spc476 4y agoThe British and French have their fair share of the blame for drawing the borders they way they did.

- collegeburner 4y agolol bsfr, you really think the middle east would be a paradise without us? it's "the graveyard of empires" with a 3 thousand year track record of being a mess. british and french imperialism obv didn't help but come on, don't be pretending things would be all rosy if not for America. it would still be a mess just with different people in charge.
- FpUser 4y ago>"lol bsfr, you really think the middle east would be a paradise without us?" No it will not. It'll be a shit show. Does not mean you have the right to mess with them. Mind your own business. You have your own country to run.
- FromTheSteppe 4y agoNo middle east does not have "a 3 thousand year track record of being a mess". Imperialism though has a 300 years track record of messing the middle east up. You're racist.
- collegeburner 4y agodude the middle east is where civilization started, who tf was colonizing them? the middle east has been in conflict literally as far back as we have recorded history. imperialism sure asl hasn't helped it keep up in the last 300 but my point is this isn't exactly new. > You're racist stfu man, i can't even argue with you if you won't operate with a bare minimum of good faith.
- FromTheSteppe 4y agoThe middle east has not been in any more or less conflicts than rest of the world. You have provided no statistics to prove this. By 1912, Maroc, Algerie, and Tunisie was under French control; Libye was under Italian control, Egypt, Sudan, Oman and Eastern Iran was under English control; and Northern Iran was under Russian control. In Iran specifically, Allies caused 2 great famines in Iran(1917-1919, 1942-1943); Reza Shah was deposed in 1941 by the allies; democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh was overthrown in 1953 by CIA/MI6; Germany built Iraq's chemical weapon program and to prevent an Iranian victory, the United States supported the Iraqi army in their use of chemical weapons. How can operate I with a bare minimum of good faith with someone who denies oppression and injustice? You're just being called out.
- chaosbolt 4y ago>net exporter Doesn't matter, SA sells its oil for USD to everyone else, aka they have to buy the dollar to buy the oil, that's what keeps that fiat afloat (+a huge fleet ready to kill civilians anywhere if you were to not comply)
- LatteLazy 4y agoThe only reason they sell in USD (aside from stability) is that they buy things in USD (weapons, financial services, US investments). THAT is what keeps the US dollar value higher (which isn't a good or bad thing in and of itself). This isn't a conspiracy, it's no different to how you sell your labour in USD instead of asking for bitcoin...
