I’ve often felt that climate conversation requires an “oh fuck” moment to prompt us to genuine, timely action.
Unfortunately that won’t happen naturally, because of the boiled frog effect.
The other problem is that the media & political rhetoric today has damaged our ability to be effectively stimulated by “oh fuck” moments.
I think the best thing we can do is put people in office who will be alive for a future above 1.5°C.
- version_five 4y agoIt needs to stop being political for people to change anything. It's relatively easy for people to solve engineering problems in front of them. Nobody (well only religious converts) are going to sacrifice because you tell then the end is nigh. There is not going to be some scientific report that changes anyone's minds. It's purely political at this point. The most realistic thing we can do is build sustainable technological solutions. This idea that we can implement some kind of forced socialism will work out as badly as it did ~100 years ago

Definitely not suggesting a scientific report, more like a hottest year on record with record famine, no meat, record gas prices, and a hailmary that the content algorithms peddle a consistent message that regardless of which generation dug is into this hole, we’re responsible for digging this and the next one out, that it can be done, or else there’s no mankind. Or maybe mankind will chose to define its future by whoever it makes the richest. “Seems like a dumb experiment”, to quote a certain climate change advocate.
- tuatoru 4y agoCopied from another submission: "Droughts, deluges, heatwaves, blizzards, tornadoes, cyclones, forest fires, floods, crop diseases, sea level rise, reservoirs and rivers emptying, crop germination and pollination failure, harvest failure, desertification, coral bleaching, fishery collapse, novel pandemics, old diseases returning from the permafrost, insect apocalypse, apex predators disappearing, life expectancy falling..." That was this year. Oh, fuck...?
- raydiatian 4y ago> The other problem is that the media & political rhetoric today has damaged our ability to be effectively stimulated by “oh fuck” moments. First of all, it’s still not everybody’s backyard, especially not the people in power with the ability to change things. Out of sight, out of mind. > That was this year. Oh, fuck...? Yep, you get it, HN crowd for sure gets it. But ICEs won’t be banned from EU until 2035, Paris Climate accords goals are going to be missed by huge margins, oil companies posting record profits. You’ve got to have something that “oh fuck”s everybody out of driving their car, cancels their international travel plans, and encourages as many of us as possible to switch to studying STEM. We basically need a global “Pearl Harbor”—the type of event that warped US around seemingly single minded war effort—except it’s not a war against fellow man, and it’s planet scale. Otherwise we lose.
