Arm Changes Business Model – OEM Partners Must Directly License from Arm
- pfoof 4y ago> This is going to accelerate RISC-V roadmaps rapidly. So that's some good news right here
- scarface74 4y agoYeah and it’s also going to be the year of the Linux desktop.
- thebitstick 4y agoriscv64gc-apple-darwin perhaps won't just be a dream!
- speed_spread 4y agoMaybe you're joking but Apple has no reason to get off ARM, ever. They have a perpetual license. It's essentially their architecture.
- petra 4y agoWhen everybody else would invest in risc-V, things might change.
- snvzz 4y agoI'm getting Commodore vibes from ARM's mismanagement.
- scarface74 4y agoIf only ARM had as customers two or three companies that were worth 1T+ dollars that they could count on…
- speed_spread 4y agoWe need the RISC-V equivalent of the SID chip.
- wyldfire 4y agoThis seems like a huge shakeup. And it's not just Qualcomm who'd be impacted. What's the rationale for this move? > Furthermore, Qualcomm claims that Arm is telling the OEMs that semiconductor manufacturers will not be able to provide other elements of their Arm-based SOCs that Arm also offers as a licensed product. This includes GPUs, NPUs, and ISP.
- emn13 4y agoSoftbank is trying to IPO ARM - see https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-03-24/softbank-is-said-to-be-seeking-at-least-60-billion-in-arm-ipo https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-03-24/softbank-... or https://www.reuters.com/breakingviews/best-destination-softbanks-arm-ipo-is-nowhere-2022-10-07/ https://www.reuters.com/breakingviews/best-destination-softb... And it's notable that their target of 60$ billion is aspirational - but even that is in a sense shockingly low considering how much all the various players in their market rely on them. Apple has a 2500 $ billion market cap; TSMC 320 $ billion; qualcomm 132 $ billion; nvidia 336 $ billion. In that context, it makes sense they're trying to improve their negotiating position to increase the promise of higher future income. Gotta pump that IPO value somehow...
