Another clear proof that you are easily fucked when you use proprietary softwares! The worse for users is to remember that they paid to be screwed like this.

Another clear proof that you are easily fucked when you use proprietary softwares!
The worse for users is to remember that they paid to be screwed like this.
- jollyllama 4y agoDoubly so when it's a subscription model w/ forced updates. At least in the old days, when you paid to "own" a copy, you could keep it running as long as all of its dependencies worked.
- tanseydavid 4y agoI can't wait for the next version of Pantone Pink! I mean, really. </sarc>
- CharlesW 4y agoI think you mean "proprietary color systems". Open source software has never supported PANTONE.
- josephcsible 4y ago> I think you mean "proprietary color systems". No, "proprietary software" is correct. > Open source software has never supported PANTONE. The point is that with open source software, once you get something it can't be unilaterally revoked, and this doesn't make that false.
- CharlesW 4y ago> No, "proprietary software" is correct. Nope. PANTONE (a.k.a. Pantone Matching System) is a color system (or color-matching system, if you prefer) that existed long before microcomputers. The system itself is the proprietary bit. If it weren't, open source software could easily support it.
- josephcsible 4y agoYes, Pantone and Photoshop are both proprietary. My point is that if people instead used a FOSS image editing program, they'd never end up in the situation where some feature of it they were previously using gets unilaterally taken away.
- dkarras 4y agoWith open source, you would not be able to get it in the first place, period. PANTONE has intellectual property here and no crowdsourced / opensource alternative exists if you want to do what PANTONE provides for you. Here, you have the option to pay to get it.
- josephcsible 4y ago> With open source, you would not be able to get it in the first place, period. Which would indeed have avoided this problem. This bait-and-switch is worse than just never having been able to use Pantone colors at all would have been, because now they're holding your existing .psd files hostage.
- dkarras 4y ago> Which would indeed have avoided this problem. This bait-and-switch is worse than just never having been able to use Pantone I understand that you have ideologically strong feelings about this... But no.
