I once worked for a large telco, and we wanted to run an Elasticsearch cluster to do some data analysis. Unfortunately, we worked in the wrong part of the organisation so we weren't allowed to buy servers :(
However, we knew someone in the building opposite who was responsible for the company's streaming TV service. They were retiring a whole bunch of CDN machines, similar to these, which had a crazy amount of storage per node.
While we weren't allowed to buy servers, we were allowed to buy components, so I got a bunch of the retired servers and bought enough RAM to max them out.
Made a lovely ES cluster :)
- petercooper 4y agoWhile we weren't allowed to buy servers, we were allowed to buy components I'm curious. Could you have bought all the components to build your own servers under that policy? :-D
- bluedino 4y agoReminds me of the Sun repairman who would order extra parts here and there for customers, and ended up building his own machine.

- dylan604 4y agoExcept one story is about people doing things legitimately to get things done within the constraints of their corporate overlords while the other is about a thief ripping people off. Not so similar after all
- sophacles 4y ago> while the other is about a thief ripping people off Is that what happened? I can imagine all sorts of scenarios where that's not true. You got some better info than the above comment on this?
- quickthrower2 4y agoCongratulations on performing that red tape origami.
